          Description

The Hermès 29cm Shoulder Birkin (sometimes called the “Shoulder Birkin 29” or “Shoulder Birkin Light 29”) is a modern reinterpretation of the classic Birkin bag with a twist. Originally conceived by designer Jean-Paul Gaultier in 2004 as a larger 42cm “Shoulder Birkin,” the new 29cm version retains the iconic Birkin look – including the flap with two sangles (straps) and turn-lock (touret) closure, clochette with lock and keys, and double rolled handles – but with elongated handles and a shortened height for shoulder carry. Gaultier’s innovation was to extend the Birkin’s handles and reduce its height so it can fit comfortably under the arm, effectively creating an “east-west” Birkin silhouette.

In the current 29cm model, the proportions are more compact and streamlined: approximately 29 cm wide, ~15–18 cm tall, and ~13 cm deep (about 11.5″ × 6.25″ × 5.2″) with a handle drop around 14–15 cm. This gives it a squat, rectangular profile compared to a standard Birkin. Despite the smaller size, it still offers a decent interior capacity similar to a Birkin 30, but in a sleeker shape.

Caban is a relatively new addition to Hermès’ color palette, introduced in the Fall/Winter 2022 collection. The name 'Caban' is derived from the French word for a pea coat – a heavy woolen overcoat – reflecting the color’s roots in classic naval attire. In essence, Caban is an ultra-dark blue, so deep that it can appear almost black at first glance. What makes it special is the subtle twist: unlike a pure jet black, Caban reveals a blue-based undertone that gives it a distinctive character and elegance.

Embroidered Motif: The toile canvas is adorned with an embroidered pattern (“Bivouac” motif). This pattern adds depth and character – for example, earlier Hermès limited editions like the HAC “Western” featured contrasting color embroidery to elevate a classic silhouette. In the Birkin 29, the embroidery may form subtle geometric shapes or an “H” lattice motif, though done in a refined tone-on-tone manner (so the design is stylish yet not overly loud). This is a departure from traditional plain toile Birkins, injecting a decorative element into the design.
